ACMA media release 80/2011 – 16 August

The Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Cybersmart program is
making its first visit to Katherine in the Northern Territory as part of its
ongoing commitment to educating students, parents and teachers across Australia
on the importance of staying safe online.

Cybersmart will be providing free seminars at primary and secondary schools
in Katherine on 16 August that will explore potential risks faced by children
when they go online, as well as strategies to deal with these risks.

On 17 August the ACMA will then give its first presentation through
Katherine School of the Air, a Distance Education School operated by the NT
Department of Education. It caters for isolated primary and middle school
students living in the top half of the territory.

‘These seminars are extremely popular wherever we deliver them across
Australia, and now even very remote areas thanks to the School of the Air,’
said Lesley Harrison, the ACMA Cybersmart Trainer visiting Katherine. ‘The
content has been carefully designed to meet the cybersafety needs of both
students and teachers.’

Cybersmart will also run a free evening session specifically for parents on
the 16th. The one hour session will explain what children commonly
do online and flag warning signs that their children’s safety may be at risk.
It will also discuss strategies for how to deal with cybersafety issues. The
event will be hosted by Katherine High School.

‘The internet offers many amazing benefits to young Australians,’ Ms
Harrison said. ‘However, in taking advantage of these, it’s important that
their safety and security is not compromised, and that their peers, parents and
teachers understand how to stay safe.’
