‘Day for Daniel’ celebrated with online safety activities

More than 1,100 children across Australia are participating in free online
cybersafety activities organised by the Australian Communications and Media
Authority in support of ‘Day for Daniel’.

Cybersmart Detectives online cybersafety shared learning activities will run
throughout the day, with 19 schools participating.

‘Day for Daniel’ is an annual initiative of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation
to raise awareness amongst young people to be vigilant around strangers – both
online and offline.

The ACMA’s Click and
Connect research showed 35 percent of eight to 11-year-olds have received
friend requests on social networking sites from people they didn’t know-and 23
percent of these were likely to accept the request.

‘These statistics show that young people are exposed to risks when they are
online-and they don’t always deal with these risks appropriately,’ said Graham
Rodrick, Senior Advisor of the ACMA’s Cybersmart Programs section. ‘While some
friend requests from strangers are innocent, there is potential for children to
be exposed to risk.’

‘Cybersmart Detectives interactive activities allow students to explore
issues like dealing with strangers and giving out personal information online,
in a safe school environment’ he said.

Officers from a number of Australian police forces and cybersafety experts
from around Australia will act as guides to assist students navigate through
each scenario.

Cybersmart’s key messages for the day are:

  • Don’t share your personal information online without checking with an
    adult you trust
  • Be careful, people online can lie about who they are and what they
    want
  • Tell someone if anyone asks you to do something that makes you feel
    uncomfortable online
