Mobile broadband—connecting to mobile networks using dongles, tablets, data cards and smartphones—has changed the way many Australians work and live, and significantly boosted the economy.
The economic impacts of mobile broadband on the Australian economy, from 2006 to 2013 highlights the increasing take-up and use of mobile broadband technologies by consumers and businesses. The report was commissioned by the ACMA and undertaken by the Centre for International Economics.
The impacts of mobile broadband have flowed through all aspects of the Australian economy:
- In 2013, mobile broadband led to an estimated increase in Australia’s economic activity of $33.8 billion. Of this, $26.5 billion was attributed to time savings for businesses using mobile broadband.
- Productivity of the mobile sector increased by 11.3 per cent per year from 2006 to 2013.
- 25 per cent of businesses surveyed said that mobile broadband adoption led to reduced business operating costs.
- Growth in mobile broadband productivity, use and demand has led to greater competition and affordability—the average cost of a mobile telecommunication connection decreased by 21 per cent between 2006 and 2013.
The report also informs the ACMA’s spectrum management activities by analysing the factors that influence the requirements for spectrum in the future, such as the increased take-up and use of mobile broadband technologies.
Business mobile communications usage and impact survey
A survey of 1,002 Australian businesses was undertaken to better understand the productivity improvements achieved by business through the use of mobile broadband. This formed part of the economic impacts of mobile broadband technologies research and is a key data source to the report. The technical report to the survey, including information on survey methodology, sample size and number survey respondents, is now available and the results of the survey will be released shortly.
